Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from an appointment?

Initial appointments are typically around 45 minutes and, depending on the nature of your injury or condition, your Hand Therapist will then advise you on the need for and frequency of ongoing appointments to ensure you have the best outcome. Follow-up review appointments are also 45 minutes.

Additional items, such as splints or braces, are not included in the consult fee. Your therapist will discuss any additional costs involved if these items are recommended to manage your condition.

How can my needs be addressed by telehealth?

Insight Hand Therapy strongly believes that health care should be accessible to all individuals, whether they live 15 minutes or 5 hours away from the closest Hand Therapy Clinic. Geographical area, access to transport, or access to suitably trained health professionals should not be a barrier to accessing health care when needed.

Telehealth is a fantastic option for clients who can’t attend therapy because of:

-       Geographical location

-       Difficulty accessing transport

-       Lack of suitably trained health professionals in the local area

Telehealth appointments are just like any face-to-face appointment, except you can do them from the comfort of your own home! We will start by having a chat about what your concerns are, a review of any of your referral paperwork or imaging, and then we might run through a few movements or tests to ensure the correct diagnosis. This diagnosis will then be clearly explained so that you can feel confident in understanding what is happening with your injury or condition, and how you are going to be able to recover and mange it. Education is a big part of the process! Next, we might set some goals for what you are hoping to achieve through hand therapy and can review any recommendations or exercises that may help you. We can go through the exercises together to ensure you are feeling confident with these and discuss how these might fit in with your life. Your Hand Therapist will also review any certain activities you should avoid doing or recommend safe ways to continue participation.

Sometimes, a brace or specific therapy item might be recommended – your Hand Therapist can discuss this with you and we can work out the best way for you to access this therapy item. It is just like a face-to-face consultation but from the comfort of your own home!

What is the difference between a Hand Therapist and my regular physiotherapist?

Accredited Hand Therapists (as awarded by the Australian Hand Therapy Association) or AHTs are either Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists who have undertaken significant additional training in the field of Hand and Upper Limb Rehabilitation. It is a challenging accreditation to achieve. At present there are only approximately 400 AHTs in Australia!

Accredited Hand Therapists are experts in managing the hand and upper limb - this is their bread and butter (and their passion), and you will receive specialised, up-to-date advice and treatment.

How do you stay up-to-date with current evidence for my treatment?

Insight Hand Therapy prides itself on providing the absolute best care for clients and this involves staying up-to-date with the latest research and treatment techniques. We frequently attend professional development courses, national and international conferences for Hand Therapists and Hand Surgeons and can usually be found reading the latest article on upper limb management between clients!

We are working hard at finding a solution to this in the near future, as it is our goal to have a totally accessible space. In the meantime, please get in contact and we can discuss the option of a home visit (within local areas) to ensure you can still access Hand Therapy services, or alternatively we can book a telehealth appointment.
